I would like to say…ratio is 3 females to 1 male!

hu hu. They do do that. They’re beautiful freshwater fish but they are just nippy little b*****ds. First, How many do you have there in that 37 gallon tank? Remember the formula; 1 gallon water per 2″ full grown fish. If you got more then three, they’re ALL going to be extra pissy because their home is too small.
As far as the ratio: put in one male with two females. (lucky him).

If you want to keep them truly happy, (and give them the ability to create their own ‘food’), the bottom of your tank should have at least two flat surfaces; a rock leaning against a taller piece of wood, etc. My male digs holes into the gravel floor underneath a piece of wood and a dinosaur skull decoration. Also give them plenty of places to hide. Plants are great and all, but in the limited floor space of the tank, you need to balance plenty of places to hide & swim around through at least mid-level of the tank. ~ while you’re doing this also remember the spacing around things you need for your vacuum and cleaning.
