Cloudy Eye Cichlid Disease?

Hi,

I received off my brother in law a 4″ x 18 tank with about 18 Malawi Cichlids (Labs / Blues etc) – one of them had what I thought was White Cloud eye – his eyes where covered over with white markings, and he couldn’t see – I was treating him with Mela Fix and one of the eyes seemed to clear up. However his other eye hasn’t after almost 2 weeks. Additionally the eye that still has issues is ‘flat’ against the skin – i.e. doesn’t have the dome shape the healthier eye does.

Now today I discovered a second fish with the same ‘flat’ eye appearance and a white covering – is this still Cloud Eye – or is it damage to the eye itself or?

And can I treat it?

I had the same problem from my new chiclids. One of the orange ones started to stay hidden at the back of the tank and refused to come eat. Once i fished him out for a better look he had both his eye covered with this white goo. I treated the entire tank with Primafix from API. Its an antifungal fish remedy. At first the use of this chemical had no effect. Then I recieved some inside info from the local fish shop. When treating a tank for fish diseases you must remove all your filter elements. The carbon inside will neutralize the treatment. Once i did this the fish’s white eyes cleared up in four days time. I continued treatedment for two weeks after his eyes cleared up just to be sure. Also added twice the recommended amount for the first week. It has now been a month and he is a happy energetic fish again that is the first to greet me when I appear in the room. P.S. watch the amonia levels during treatment as they will spike pretty high with the filter elements removed. Best money I ever spent! :) Good Luck

This has been very helpful with my Cichlids. If I treat my tank like you did above what will happen to my other non infected species of fish if left them in there while treating the Cichlids? I have a tiger barb, 4 other barbs and some type of gold fish looking thing but not from that group.
