Years ago I used to have several species of cichlids. Its been awhile, but from what I remember your fish have developed a fungus, which can be treated with medicine from your local fish store. I think its called PimaFix or something like that. It comes in a blue plastic bottle, and you just add a few ounces to your tank water every few days and do a small water change. This should help your fish to heal in a week or two.

i did my research on that same sickness, my convict had just started showing those symptoms and i was told it was ick, so i asked around and a worker at my local fish store told me you can use one table spoon of sea salt for every 5 gallons and after a week change out half the water and it usually would kill the parasites and help with thier sickness. i know it sounds dumb to put salt in a fresh water tank but my fish are fine. he also said DO NOT PUT IODIZED SALT, IT WILL KILL THE FISH. so remember SEA SALT.

Your Africans have what’s called Malawi Bloat. The cause is feeding too much protein (carnivorous diet) and not enough vegetation. The fish can’t digest the protein and they swell up (including their lips). Only once I was able to save a fish that started to have those symptoms – usually it’s fatal. Feed mostly veggies with some protein occasionally supplemented.
