I would like to say…I have heard from a pet store that you can tell if a female has fry in her mouth by watching her when you feed them. She will come to the top as if to eat, but will swim back down without eating because she cannot open her mouth to eat.

If she hides back and does not eat or fight and looks like she is chewing, then she has eggs in her mouth. Best thing is they come out ready for dry food.

you will know if your fish has fry… the mouth will look big and saggy, and the fish will stop eatting and hide more. i have a mother fish right now and she has carryed these eggs for 3 weeks. they lose alot of weight. it was really easy to see what she had, because she came up to the tank wall and they do slosh the eggs around meaning they open their mouths. you will see the eggs, they are orange in color or at least mine are, may be because the mom fish is orange and the dad is orange and purple. But trust me YOU WILL KNOW! and i have seen people over stock their tanks. these fish love others company! and i have little aggresion in my tank. as long as they are all the same size and you have alot of hiding spots, you can add till you start getting agresion. i saw a 120 gallon with 80 plus full size ones. mine is a 80 and i have 10 fish in it. i could have more but i have not built up my tank all the way yet. hope this helps

I have a 55 gallon tank with 30 cichilds in it. Most are large and some med to small. The more you have the better as they will not fight so much. I didn’t believe it until I tried and sure enough it works!…..

The second comment is correct. She will fortifie herself and may have a male defending her in some corner of the tank that they have laid clams too. Neather fish will eat. Dont woory the parental instincts will have kicked in long before she got knocked up and she will have eaten enough to survive till they start swimming around. I would suggest if you see her mouth start bulging up to remove here to a tank of her own for the birth. leave the male behind and he sould start eating again after a few days. Once you see the babies swimming around make sure you feed her good so she dont gobble them up. It is natural during there first few tries for them to be eaten. Once the babies start in on hard food take her away back to the home tank with her stud. :)
