  1. I have a plecostemus with my cichlids, but he has places where he can escape from them. Also, having more fish is usual better with cichlids because no one fish gets singled out in the crowd. Also, you can buy pellets that prevent algae and add them to your tank.

  2. I would like to say…defenetly my friend, you sould get that “monster fish a new home”it would help to know just how big is it?

  3. I am thinking of getting cichlids as I grew up with them and oscars. I currently have huge large ballas and catfish. I also have a chinease algae eater and he is really big. I know they will defend themselves as long as they have a small cave they can fit in to get away from the other fish if needed. Do you have caves? I have a large rock that has holes all over in it but when I need to catch him we were in the garage with it for almost 10 minutes trying to get him out. I am gonna keep him and see if he works. They get aggresive when there older and he is older now. Try and find an older larger one instead of babies.

  4. good gawds. These aren’t really all posts by the same person, are they? *sigh* anyhow…
First things first… doesn’t sound like you should have more than two fish in there. You refer to “he” as “big” and I assume this refers to his tank mate, who can probably dish it as good as get it, but isn’t inclined to be as aggressive as the chichlid.
“I have an African chiclid that keeps eating off my algae eaters. He killed off the one he grew up with and two since then.”

…yeah dude. I’m suprised ‘the one he grew up with’ lasted that long.

Any pleco/catfish/other bottom/alge… or ANY other fish for that matter… ***NOT that you should put any other type of fish in with chichlids*** should be at least twice as big as the chiclids you put in. And it helps if they’re able to defend themselves somewhat as well.
Raphel Raphaelh seem to do ok. Plecos are also ok. remember; there’s no “good” combination with chichlids. Just try to make sure everyone has their own places to hide, roost, and play. Also, remember all of these types of fish have no scales and are especially susceptible and chemical treatments like ‘ich’ treatments. try not to put salt in if you can at all get away with it. (how you do that I don’t know, my 4 seem to be doing just fine without any).
SUMMARY; All types of chichlds are aggressive, especially aggressive to other types of chichlids like Texas Green or Jack Dempseys, and doubly so to ALL other types of fish.

Also, if you’re used to community fresh water fish, like silver dollars or perhaps having a herd of goldfish, the differences are acute. I like to call these fish ‘cow’ fish, because they don’t eat each other or others. Chichlids are a solitary, pair, or small group fish; whereas you need a group of 4-6 fish just to keep silver dollars happy.

  5. My parents have an established tank and they to were attacking the algae eater. They put a placo and an armor plated algae eater in there and the fish have tried and gave up on attacking them.

  6. I have had the same problem and gave up buying any kind of algea eaters or plecos. The best advise we ever got was to only turn the lights on at night. When I come home from work I turn the lights on, and turn them off when I go to bed. I have never, ever had a problem with algea ever since. My tank is always crystal clear – and people have always commented on that fact. You might want to try it because Cichilds are worth the effort. Very interesting fish.

  7. I would like to say… You should not put any other fish other than ciclids in the tank. They will attack and kill the fish. I recommend snails they should not be able to penetrate their shell. hOwever alagae comes from too much light or sunlight. make sure your tank is not in front of a window. which promotes alagae growth.

  8. I would like to say…I have a 10 gallon tank with a single Electric yellow lab cichlid that sits near a window and has algae problems every so often. Algae eaters would last a day or two at most. The only thing that sort of worked was snails but I had to get them in bulk because my cichlid would suck up the shell in his mouth and blow them at the sides of the tank like basketballs until their shells split. I find it easier (and cheaper) to just do a quick scrub down of the tank and change out some of the water twice a month. The scrubbers that work off magnets work pretty well except for corners.

  9. I would like to say… i have a 55 gal tank with 8 african cichlids and a shark and two plecostemuses and i have no problems at all i just have two medium sized logs and two plants try something like that and see what happens

  10. i have cichlids with a pleco and they seem to leave it alone. i bought a larger pleco because i will soon be going in a bigger tank (piranha). i would agree that as long as the pleco is able to hide and is significantly larger then the largest cichlid he will do fine. my pleco i bought at 7inches. ask at your pet store they can normaly get you large pleco’s they cost almost triple but its worth it if you have agressive fish. i’m lucky enough to have a girlfriend that works at a pet store.

  11. I have 3 Oscars in a large tank with an algae eater and do not have a problem. However, one of my Ocars is about a foot long and was eating my smaller Oscars. My remedy for this: I keep the tank filled with at least 10-30 feeder fish and it keeps him happy. As long as he has the feeder fish, he does not bother any other fish that is in the tank. My smaller Oscars like them as well but they have no agression towards other Cichlids.

  12. I would like to say…I agree with put a plecostemus twice the size of your largest Cichild, and u should be o.k., and if u have hide outs for smaller fish, it would be a good Idea, most chichilds like caves and rocks anyway, it reflects their natural enviroment. Good luck, Bob

  13. Try a small school of Chinese algae eaters. Like three or four of them. They are fast so they can get away, and having several allows them to group together and keep the pressure off of one fish. Mine are doing wonderful, they follow each other around closely and are not getting hurt by my 8 cichlids, 12″ upside-down catfish, or the crayfish I have in the tank.

  14. I would like to say…that I have between 13-15 African cichlids, 6 catfish, 2 allergy eaters in a 75 gallon tank and they all get along very well! The only deaths have been 2 mollys and an oscar. The chchlids don’t bother the catfish or the allergy eaters. I feel like its because they have over 12 hiding spots, so that’s why I believe they get along great. This is my first chchild tank that I’ve had for about a yr. now and its not a problem w/ allergy or flights.

  15. For me it comes down to setting up the tank size and hiding places it sounds like you have agressive cichlids in your tank and they dont often mix well in a community type tank. Cichlid Behaviour in the wild is the same they often bully smaller fish.

  16. i need help please – i have a 30 gal tank – 5 african cichlids, not sure of the exact kind, (4 males and 1 female) – i’ve had to remove the female becuz the males were attacking her.. also, they just beat up my chinese algae eater.. should i do like some1 suggested above and put several (2-3) CAE’s in the tank with them? also, what do i need to do to prevent them from killing the female? do i need to find another female or two? thank you.

  17. Hi Everyone, great storys! we have a 65 gallon tank..in the tank we have a turtle,8 cichlids, fiddler crab, and a placo..interesting tank,Franklin(the turtle)..has an “island” he sunbaths on,,him and fish get along well. The Placo on the other hand,,tryed to “drown” the turtle by holding him under water.and always latching on him and cleaning him…crazy stuff..lol..anyway .we gave placo away..gonna get a little bit smaller
