  1. I would like to say…you can it depends on how much hiding they have in the tank if you dont have much it might be better to take them out

  2. It is possible that the parents will eat the babies. Very common. Move the baby to another tank if you want to guarantee their survival.

  3. You have obviously figured out what to do by now – your post was awhile ago – but I just wanted to say that as long as you can give the babies enough coverage, places to hide – they will do fine. Survival of the fittest. I have been able to sucessfully raise quite a few ‘babies’ over the past 3 years to the point where I have had to move from a 30 gallon to a new 90 gallon tank. Just keep in mind – they need to be able to hide in safe spots (plants or rocks) and they need to be able to eat. I have been using a turkey baster to get fine flake food to them. Works great. My next move is to trade a whack of the babies in and eventually just have an all male tank.

  4. I’m on my 2nd batch of frye, first batch were eaten, died naturally, or died when I did a water change and moved the cover around. Only saw them for a few days.

This 2nd batch seems to be growing quickly, as I have plenty of cover, and I’m not moving anything until they’re large enough. They’re apprx 2 weeks old, and are atleast 1/4″ to 3/8″ in length already. They’ll pop out from the cover to eat the flake food, and hide immediately when an adult comes near. It’s very cool seeing the babies, you can make out all the stripes and different colors.

This alpha male is right back to work moving the gravel in making another “Love nest”…..Let’s see if I get a 3rd batch of frye !!

  5. all fish are diffrent with chiclids i found you can leave the parents and they look after there babys very well.. even the red devils and there a highly aggressive fish but very careing parents if you take the fry out then re introduce them they get singled out and eaten.. i’ve tryed this a few times.. angle fish are ok near the start but better off taking the parents out after the fry have hatched… bristlenose are fine breed like rabbits.. and yes you can cross breed certain fish.. iv’e been doing this for some time.. and feeding em is easy just normal flake food and break it up in ur hands till its really fine also if you want add 1 drop a water to the food while breaking it up and you can roll it into lil food bombs they roll up all the small fine flakes then when in the tank usally goes straghit down and breaks away for them to eat.. but seperating the parents you dont have to just remove any other fish you may have instead.. and the parents usally look out for the fry unless there is lack of room for them.. i got a 200l tank had 600 baby red devils and they were fine till the second batch of eggs went to come threw and i hadnt made room the male killed the female and left the babies alone still… good luck

  6. I would like to say… that i just got a tank and i have 2 african cichlids and that have had babies alot of them and i dont have much hiding spots what should i do and what do i need to get for them to have more hiding spots

  7. I would like to say…i had 3 african cichlids 2 male and one female but one was much smaller it had a white spot on his head (the smaller one) and my female had, babies and the male chased the smaller male alot so i thought it had ich and i removed him but now the spot is gone, so what should i do should i put him back in now but the breeding part has start letting their babies swim all around the tank what should i do with the other male?

  8. I would like to say i have three African chilchild and ones a baby girl the male keeps following her around and she’s hidding in a ship thing in my tank.. what can i do abnout that?

  9. @Kendra Your male cichlid must be very aggressive and you need to separate the young female from him.

  10. I would like to say…Thank you all answering my question the best you could and now a little more on my cichlids i’m very new at this so bare with me they fish.I think it was late Sept. of last year when the first eggs were laid I tryed to watch them carefully and soon all the eggs were gone. well recently eggs were laid again this time I removed all the other fish except mom and dad I think she is moving them from the shell now and the dad is like covering others up in the corner of the tank am i missing a step something else I should do Thanks for reading this maybe u can help

  11. I would like to say…my fish (red jewel cichlids) just had babies and i have a 10 gallon as well as my community of cichlids in my 75g. should I leave my frye in the tank and out them in the 10g or leave them in the community tank which have a ton of places to hide? 2/9/12….

  12. @Happy pop pop JUst separate them if you have observed some patterns of bad behavior.

  13. i have a male and female African chichlid they have had 3 hatched groups of babies but the male killed all the youngest ones and the ones before that. just last night the female is pretty much torn to pieces but still alive…so were pretty much in the same place.

  14. looking for opinions I have a 90gal tank and my rustys and yellow labs have been breeding. I am mostly concerned that they will get over populated. Or will the dominant fish take care of that? My wife will not be happy if I buy another tank lol.

  15. Our black convicts just had about 20 to 30 babies in the tank full of other cichids should we move the babies to another tank & how do we do that without hurting them?

  16. I have assorted chuckles ranging from 3inches to 9 inch they all are semi aggressive was told they would not breed in a community tank I set it up as natural as possible with piles of rock rock caves pot caves and sand. And after I put sand and rock formation and clay pot caves. They almost instantly started breeding I have 3different batches of babies. One just spat out new and I watched 2 lay eggs suck them up and to there breeding dance it was cool but with 40adult assorted sizes and breeds of chillies the babies survive and it seems they all kinda look after the babies my fish eat live food as well and they do well with distinguishing between feeders and fry. So I was well amazed how a community actually looks after the young and can distinguish between food and fry of there own species
